After pricing at the high end of its $12-$14 proposed range, Indian travel website MakeMyTrip opened sharply higher at $19 and traded as high as $24.50 (up 75% from the offer price). If it holds on to these gains, MakeMyTrip could have the best first-day pop for a US-listed IPO since online degree provider American Public Education (APEI jumped 80% in its November 2007 debut. In the process, it would eclipse the May 2009 IPO of online restaurant reservation provider Open Table (OPEN), which had a 60% pop, as well as the 50% first-day gain of lithium ion battery manufacturer A123 Systems (AONE) in September of 2009.
